Meg Hunt ([info]exitwounds) does some really neat stuff with patterns, which I've always admired, so I thought I'd mess around with more patterns too. I get a bit of a chuckle at how literal this sketch I wound up doing is. It is not how Meg uses patterns at all!

I think I have to cut myself off from drawing pensive ladies, especially faux-victorian pensive ladies with button-up dresses.

This is so creepy and wonderful. I really like the buttons down their dresses!

gosh! this is so lovely. i could see these fabrics becoming huger and looming over, taking over. could see it as a screenprint too.

i am glad to inspire! i love seeing how the same basic idea (patterning) can lead to so many different interpretations. it thus reinspires me!

Ha ha, yeah, I think the patterns taking over was what I was unconsciously afraid of! I was trying to be brave but I ended up with this very uptight picture where the patterns are very contained. :P I want to mess around with them more and incorporate them into the actual image-making.

I want to do some art screen prints sometime, small runs instead of the killer 500+ cover runs we do. I love the stuff you do with transparencies. That would be fun!

yes you totally should do art prints! they'd sell like hotcakes and would be a little less soul-crushing than insane cover runs :) and of course i would love to trade. plus, i think you could work some great stuff with fabric printing--of course you're busy with the book but i remember your dolls and such-- that could add another dimension to things. :)

oh, screenprinting. my secret one true love! i can't wait to see what you do with them.

ps: i still think the image is brave. you did something new! and the contrast between the patterns and those heavy blacks is really exciting to me.

I think faux-Victorian pensive ladies are the best kind of pensive ladies.

This is really beautiful!
